Fall CANVAS Newsletter – CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS

It’s that time again, time to put together our fall newsletter. But we need your help! Here are ways you can contribute.

· Are you a new member? Send a paragraph about yourself and your workplace. Include a photo too.

· Have you changed jobs, been promoted, or retired in the last year. Tell us about it.

· Would you like to be featured in our Member Spotlight section?

· Do you know a student who would like to be featured in our Student Spotlight section?

· Have you attended an ARLIS/SC meeting or activity in 2013/14 and are willing to summarize the event or send in photos?

· Have another idea? Let us know.

All contributions will be due on Friday, November 21. Please email cathryn.copper@woodbury.edu ASAP if you are willing to share something.

Come join the ARLIS/SC Chapter for its Fall Business Meeting and a look into of the private art world of Venice Beach where we will tour both the LA Louver Art Gallery and JAB Art Enterprises (Production Studio and Library of artist, John Baldessari.)

Free street parking is available on Canal St. two blocks south of the intersection of North Venice Blvd. and Ocean Ave. The streets parallel to Canal (West and East) have free street parking too, if spots are available.

The ARLIS/NA Southern California Chapter Happy Hour is an informal networking event at a local bar for Arts Information Professionals of Southern California.

2014 Travel Award Winners!

Please join us in congratulating the 2014 winners of the Travel Awards of the ARLIS/NA Southern California Chapter. The winners are both first-time attendees and active members of our professional community and we are excited to have them join us at the ARLIS/NA Conference in Washington DC.

ARLIS/SC Judith A. Hoffberg Travel Award, Claire Kennedy, Archivist at John Baldessari Studio
The Judith A. Hoffberg Travel Award is awarded to Claire Kennedy who works as the archivist to artist John Baldessari in Venice, California. She also plays an important role as the Vice Chair Elect of the Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA.
ARLIS/SC Student Travel Award, Clarice De Veyra, 2014 MLIS Candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles
The Student Travel Award goes to Clarice De Veyra, a student at UCLA in the MLIS program, new member of ARLIS/NA and an active board member of the Special Libraries Association Southern California Chapter (SLA-SCC).
A big thanks to everyone who applied for the Travel Awards and to Isotta Poggi for again fulfilling the role of ARLIS/NA Southern California Chapter Travel Committee.

Tour of Gagosian Gallery

Hi everyone,

Please join ARLIS-SC on a visit to the Gagosian Gallery with resident Archivist/Librarian Ben Lee Ritchie Handler on Saturday, April 12th at 11:00 am

Come learn how information professionals working in the private sphere work with art and art resources!

The tour will begin at 11am and will take an hour + with questions at the end. Coffee and light snacks will be provided.

Besides enjoying a great chat with Ben Lee, we will have the pleasure of viewing the Taryn Simon exhibition in the gallery before it closes on Saturday.

For those planning on attending the ARLIS/NA 42nd Annual Conference in Washington DC this year please note that our Chapter Business Meeting will be held on:

Saturday, May 3rd from 12:00-1:00pm,

Franklin Square Room (Self-scheduled meeting room)

Apply for a Travel Award!

The Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA is currently inviting applicants for its annual Student and Judith A. Hoffberg Travel Awards. This year $400 will be awarded to each recipient to support and encourage involvement in ARLIS/NA activities by helping to defray the costs of attending the 2014 ARLIS/NA 42nd Conference in Washington D.C.

Letters of application are due by March 20, 2014 and the winners will be notified by March 30, 2014. For more information on eligibility and how to apply visit the Travel Awards page.

Tour of Blizzard Entertainment Campus and Library (creators of World of Warcraft)

Friday, December 13th 11:00am – 2:00pm

Join ARLIS-SC for a tour of Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine, the company behind World of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.

We will have a tour of the campus from 11-12pm, break for lunch in the cafe from 12-1pm and finally a tour of the library with questions from 1-2pm.

Please RSVP by December 6th!

Parking is available inside the campus with free valet if you have trouble finding a spot (this is for real!)

Prices at the cafe are $6-8 for an entree and veggie options and a salad bar are available but feel free to bring your own food!

Additionally, if anyone is interested, the Irvine Spectrum is very close by with restaurants and lots of places to do holiday shopping if you would like to stay in the area. Javiar’s Cantina is a good place to get margaritas and food.
