Message from Cate Cooney, ARLIS/NA Chapters Coordinator

ARLIS/NA has a new management firm, Technical Enterprises, Incorporated (TEI.) TEI is headquartered outside of Milwaukee WI, and as their name implies, they provide a wide range of technology support. It was their technical capabilities, combined with their personalized support and more than twenty years experience that put them at the top of the twenty-one association management firms that responded to our call for proposals. I am very excited about what they have to offer chapters. They intend to provide web hosting for chapters as well as chapter listservs, which should give great relief to chapters which have struggled to maintain their sites and lists on various institutions servers. The transition will be complete on May 1, when Nancy Short become s our new Executive Director.
The ARLIS/NA Career Mentoring Program has expanded, and will have a kick-off workshop at the Annual Conference in Indianapolis. Because not everyone can attend the annual conference, the Mentoring Subcommittee invited chapter leaders to attend and learn how to present the workshop in their region.
The 2009 Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management has been announced. It will be held at Simmons College in Boston, MA, from June 8th – June 13th, 2009. The program, co-sponsored by ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association Foundation, is in its sixth year. The SEI advisory group has recommended that SEI stay in one location two years in a row, which will ease pressure on the implementation team, while still allowing the program to move around North America and serve a wide audience.
The spring chapter meeting is a good time to brainstorm projects. Could your chapter’s idea be something the society would help fund? Applications for special funding are due July 1. Past projects have included support for symposia, and outreach materials targeted at library schools. Projects may be awarded up to $500 depending on merit of the project and availability of funds. The guidelines and a simple application form are available on the ARLIS/NA Web Site.
I am looking forward to a great conference in Indianapolis, and want to thank the Mid-States Chapter for all their hard work hosting what promises to be an exciting program!

Celebration of Judith Hoffberg’s Life

Dear Colleagues,

You are warmly invited to attend the celebration of Judy Hoffberg’s life on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at 11 am, at the art gallery Track 16 in Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station (directions at http://www.track16.com./contact.php)

Three to four members of ARLIS will speak at the service.

An artist’s book will be created in her memory, and deposited with her papers at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  If you are interested in creating a page, please use 8-1/2 x 11″ paper.  Let your inspiration be Judy’s perpetual curiosity about anything to do with libraries, books, and all kinds of art. The deadline is July 31, 2009.

There was a very nice obituary in Wednesday’s Los Angeles Times:  http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-judithhoffberg28-2009jan28,0,5648915.story

A memorial fund, the proceeds of which will be donated to support either the Artists’ Book Collection at University of California, Santa Barbara, or Judy’s Umbrelliana collection at University of California, San Diego, is being established.

Judy will also be commemorated at the ARLIS/NA conference in Indianapolis.

Please forward to anyone who may be interested.

We hope you will be able to attend.

Final Issue of Judith Hoffberg’s Umbrella

One of our chapter’s founding members, Judith Hoffberg, just announced the publication of the final issue of Umbrella over ARLIS-L:

Thursday, December 18, 2008 10:30 PM

The final issue of Umbrella Online and Umbrella is now available to anyone in the world at www.umbrellaeditions.com. You can now read Umbrella without any password or e-mail. Just go to the website whenever you want to do research or read current or back issues.
I explain why I have had to end to journal after 31 years.  Thanks you for your loyalty and support.

Sincerely,
Judith A. Hoffberg

Here is an excerpt from her piece, From the Editor, in the last issue:

Obsessed with umbrellas and parasols, it allowed me to create a huge collection of “umbrelliana” which has overwhelmed both my domestic and storage settings. I learned more about textiles, fashion, kitsch, marketing, performance art, multicultural innovations with the object umbrella, encountering artists who used the image to intrigue me as well as to whet my appetite. It has been an easy image to collect in paper ephemera as well as almost 200 three-dimensional umbrella objects. From a tiny Chinese lace umbrella to a 19th century silk parasol, from 333 antiquarian books to countless artifacts, the collection has grown over the past 30 years.

In the ensuing two months I have been in hospice, I have missed sharing with you all the art news, umbrella news, and mail art news for this issue. With this issue I say goodbye, knowing full well that you can always read back issues, do database research in all the issues from vol.1 no. 1, with Umbrella being a free journal for all to read, from 1978 through 2008. This has been made possible for posterity thanks to Indiana University and Sonja Staum-Kuniej at IUPUI.
