30th Anniversary Party, 2004

On Saturday, October 30th, 2004, ARLIS Southern California members, both past and present gathered in Santa Monica at the art-filled home of Joan Benedetti to celebrate its 30-something anniversary and to recognize its founder and long-time Southern California resident–Judith A. Hoffberg by naming the travel award in her honor.

The award reads:

In creating the Judith Hoffberg Travel Award, ARLIS/Southern California expresses its profound gratitude to our founder, Judith Hoffberg, and recognizes not only her visionary contributions to ARLIS/NA and to ARLIS/SC, but also commends her outstanding scholarly accomplishments in the fields of art librarianship and contemporary art.
Presented this day, 30 October 2004

The afternoon began at 2 with a light buffet, wine and soft drinks, followed by a welcome and recognition of founding members and past chapter officers, by Joan Benedetti. Joyce Pellerano Ludmer summarized the history of ARLIS/NA during the formative years 1972-1977, elucidating the role of Judy Hoffberg. Amy Ciccone presented Judy with her award certificate and Judy made a heartfelt speech. The current chapter Executive Board was represented by Nancy Norris and Trish Rose, who expressed the Board’s thanks to Judy and to all the past officers who have led the way. The board then surprised Joan Benedetti with a lifetime chapter membership award in honor of her significant service to ARLIS/Southern California. Joan’s award reads:

To Joan Benedetti, in honor of her exceptional and ongoing contributions to the field of art librarianship. We particularly acknowledge and commend her leadership of the ARLIS/NA 1985 Los Angeles conference, as well as her unfailing commitment to the continuing success of ARLIS/NA and the ARLIS/SC Chapter.

Cake and coffee and much good cheer followed. Within the next few weeks, we will be enhancing the Chapter web site with a list of all past chapter officers, compiled by Amy Ciccone, a short biography of Judy Hoffberg, and a brief chapter history as well as photographs from the party.
